The Portuguese Institute of Mediation and Arbitration (IMAP) is a private non-profit association created on 17th October 2005. Our institution is directly linked to the Brazilian Institute of Mediation and Arbitration (IMAB), which is a civil not-for-profit body created in 1994 in the aim of fostering the research, dissemination, empowerment and technical and scientific development of methods of conflict resolution.

IMAB was the body chosen by the Ministry of Justice to provide training for family mediators (in 2000) and to develop the first 60 mediators to be assigned to the Justices of the Peace (in 2001).

Aims

  • To hold seminars, courses, conferences, publicity campaigns, talks, debates and any type of event that seeks to change the litigious mentality prevalent in our society;
  • To train specialists in conflict resolution techniques by means of its teaching staff;
  • To provide assistance with settling conflicts, by means of conciliation, mediation and arbitration techniques and other methods of peaceful conflict resolution;
  • To supervise the professional behaviour of conflict resolution practitioners, ensuring ethical, deontological and moral standards are maintained;
  • To further the study and development of appropriate techniques for conflict resolution;
  • To establish links with national and international counterparts whenever it is deemed convenient in order to achieve the aims intended;
  • To sign conventions with public and private entities in the aim of sharing, disseminating, systematising, developing and holding courses, conferences and congresses on peaceful techniques for conflict resolution;
  • To compile lists of conciliators, mediators and arbitrators and to divulge them when requested;
  • To establish itself as a centre of excellence and scientific and cultural exchange for conflict resolution at the national and international level;
  • To collaborate with the state in pursuit of the aims contained in the government’s programmes and major policy outlines.
  • To prioritise creative and synergetic solutions in an attempt to settle and prevent litigation;
  • To publish information leaflets and general publications in accordance with needs and suitability.
